Dear Biofuels Information Exchange members
The third in a series of 5 new articles reviewing the status of Jatropha as a biofuel is now online here and provides A View From CABI scientist Dr. Peter Baker and Zoheir Ebrahim.
Jatropha - An Update
Part 3: Jatropha in China Zoheir Ebrahim & Dr. Peter Baker
Part 3: Jatropha in China Zoheir Ebrahim & Dr. Peter Baker
Introduction
During the last four years,
Chinese net oil imports have been steadily increasing and have remained
behind only the United States in terms of world rankings. Building
self-sufficiency in renewable fuels in China is therefore seen as an
important political and economic objective – an imperative agenda to
provide sustainable energy security in the context of a rising demand
for energy. Since 2007, the strategy of the Chinese government with
regard to biodiesel production has closely resembled that of the Indian
National Mission on biofuels. Due to the concern over rising food and
fuel prices, the China State Council ruled in June 2007 to prohibit the
production of biofuels from grain-based feedstocks and encouraged the
growth of jatropha due to its perceived ability to grow on marginal
lands unsuitable for food production.
The next papers in
this series will be added over the coming weeks, with Part 4 focusing on
Jatropha production in East Africa...

FOOD CROPS Cassava News 105 (Bản tin Cây Sắn)45th anniversary of CIAT, http://cassavanews.blogspot.comCongratulations on the 45th anniversary of CIAT
FOOD CROPS NEWS. 10 September 2012 in Hanoi, Vietnam, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) celebrates 45 years of research for development aimed at benefiting smallholder farmers and poor consumers across the tropical world. At the same time, the Center marks three decades of innovative research for market‐oriented agricultural development in Southeast Asia. Among them Cassava in Vietnam: a successful story Lessons learned including Enhancing the sustainability of cassava production in Vietnam through varietal dissemination and integrated management, 6M, 10T, FPR and FPE. CIAT began working in Vietnam since 1988 up to now by strengthening the capacity of national scientists working on cassava and tropical forages as well as through providing access to the germplasm collections held in trust by CIAT. Those activities led to research on crop improvement and management, which has featured strong collaboration with hundreds of partners and enjoyed continued donor support. Cassava CIAT & VIETNAM collaborative efforts have flourished, generating huge impacts on the livelihoods of the poor made possible in large part by two key developments, which have paralleled Vietnam’s overall economic success. One was the region’s remarkable cassava boom. Cassavafor bio-fuel in Vietnam is the opportunity and challenges for the farmers in rural. This has transformed the crop into a preferred raw material for industry, creating new sources of income for millions of smallholder cassava farmers, who have widely adopted improved varieties and production practices. Cassava for Food, Feed in Vietnam is the other food and livestock revolution. This has given smallholders a powerful incentive to adopt high quality tropical forages for fodder, which are turning subsistence farming into productive and sustainable enterprises in many areas. Cassavaand Vietnam: Now and Then with CIAT for research and development, including 6M, 10T, FPR and FPE to continue … The aim of this collaboration is to envisage a better future for cassava in Vietnam, in which more eco‐efficient crops and systems sharpen the competitive edge of agriculture while reducing its ecological footprint and strengthening its resilience in the face of climate change.
“ Congratulations on the 45th anniversary of CIAT.This is a good celebration and a good opportunity for me to meet many old colleagues again. I am teaching and studying on food crops at NLU. I am still rather active in cassava. I have the FOODCROPS.VN including Food Crops News, CassavaViet, CassavaNews and Crops for Biofuel. I have been consulting for several companies that want to grow cassava for starch or ethanol production. I am presently in Dak Lak, Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh, Dong Nai, Ninh Thuan, Cambodia to do some cassava experiments in Enhancing the sustainability of cassava production through varietal dissemination and integrated management . It is not easy. Anyway, I am glad that I can still be working with cassava. It is an interesting crop.”.
